History

The economic structure of countries like Sri Lanka, which consisted of a traditional economic structure, underwent an unprecedented transformation as a result of the British colonial rule, which resulted in many positive side effects such as an improved transport system, a formalized administrative structure and an economic pattern dominated by plantation crops. Areas like Haputale played a special role in the creation and implementation.
Substantial cities were created with the changes in the economic body and administrative structure, and the legal background for it was also gradually spread. Accordingly, the Municipal Council Ordinance No. 61 of 1939 was passed, under which the Haputale Municipal Council was established on August 9, 1945.
Haputale Municipal Council area consists of 2.5 square meters and is located at a height of 1431 meters above sea level. Tea cultivation is spread over 20% of the municipal area.
Blessed with a rare topography, Haputale has been recognized as an area with unlimited tourist attraction as it has access to the Upland Railway and the highway and other byways within the municipal jurisdiction.
In view of the infinite human needs that change from moment to moment and the irregular life style of man, the environment which is being destroyed very rapidly, has been conserved for the sake of the future generations and the existing limited resources have been utilized at a reasonable level.
